A Debate Tournament in English is being held at Zhumabek Tashenev University
Today, a debate tournament in English is being held at the university, where students demonstrate their knowledge, oratory skills and logical thinking. This tournament is aimed at preparing future leaders, developing their critical thinking and preparing for international debates.
4 teams, each with 3 students, participate in the tournament. Participants not only test their knowledge, but also discuss important social and scientific issues, while improving their public speaking skills. This year, the main topic of the debate is: “Can artificial intelligence replace any profession?”
The debate structure consists of three stages:
• Quiz (question-answer) – testing the knowledge and quick thinking of students
• Argumentation – teams present their position, supporting it with convincing evidence
• Cross-questions – participants ask their opponents questions, checking the logic of their arguments
Main criteria for evaluating teams:
• Argumentation – logic and validity of arguments
• Counter-argumentation – ability to refute opponents' arguments
• Public speaking – competent speech, intonation, ability to hold the audience's attention
• Structure of the speech – logical sequence and clarity of presentation of thoughts
• Teamwork – interaction and agreement of participants
Teams are awarded an additional 5 points for an original argument.
The panel of judges includes respected experts:
• Catherine Rick – Head of Professional Development at British Management University in Tashkent, partner of the university
• Irmetov Utqyr Abdrasululy – Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor
• Myrzagalikova Saule Tajibayqyzy – Senior Lecturer at the English Language Department
Catherine Rick noted the importance of debates for students:
“Western experience shows that debates are not just an intellectual game. This is a powerful social lift that helps young people freely express their thoughts, develop leadership skills and achieve success in their careers. Such tournaments prepare students for competitive struggle in the international arena”
One of the tournament participants, Muratbaev Zhavokhir, shared his impressions:
“This tournament helped me learn to clearly argue my position, respond to counterarguments of opponents and work in a team. Debates are not just a competition, they are an opportunity to develop analytical thinking and public speaking skills"
The Tashenov Union student club played a special role in organizing the tournament. This is an association of active students of Zhumabek Tashenov University, the goal of which is to create an inspiring and unique environment for students. There are more than 40 active members in the club.
The main areas of activity of Tashenov Union:
• Scientific projects - development of education and research
